Why is a blocked gutter a problem?
Leaves and dirt block the gutter, and water runs down the wall instead of the downpipe. Over time that causes damp in walls, stains, and damage to plaster and foundations.
When should it be cleaned?
Once a year, in autumn, after trees shed and before the rains. With tall trees close to the roof, check mid-winter too.
How is it done properly?
- Work from a stable ladder or the roof with safety gear.
- Clear leaves and debris from the gutter and the downpipe.
- Flush with water to make sure it flows all the way.
- Tighten loose brackets and correct the slope toward the outlet.
- Seal joints that leak.
