Shabbat timer installation

Updated 2026-10-10

A Shabbat timer switches a circuit on and off at times you set in advance: lights on Shabbat, a water heater that heats only morning and evening, or an AC that turns off at night. In D-Bell you book an electrician to install a timer in the panel or on the water heater, and you get a quote before you choose.

How much does a Shabbat timer installation cost?

Installing a Shabbat timer or another timer usually costs ILS 340 to 510, and an inspection visit ILS 250 to 390. The timer itself is usually extra. If space has to be made in the panel or a cable run is needed, the electrician sends an extra for you to approve in the app before continuing. These are average D-Bell catalog ranges.

Where does a Shabbat timer go?

The common timer goes into the electrical panel and controls one circuit, such as the living-room lights or the water heater. For it to control exactly what you want, the electrician needs to know which breaker feeds that circuit. There are also timers fitted in the wall switch box next to the water heater. Photograph the panel from outside and write what the timer should switch.

Digital or mechanical?

A mechanical timer is set with pins that mark time slots around the day and is simple to use. A digital timer allows different programs for different days of the week, which helps if you want one program for Shabbat and another for holidays. If you are not sure, write what should run and when, and the electrician will recommend one in the quote.

What should I write in the request?

  • What the timer should switch: lights, the water heater, an AC, or another circuit.
  • Whether there is free space in the panel. A photo of the panel from outside is enough.
  • Whether you already have a timer, or the electrician should bring one.
  • A convenient time, for example a few days before Shabbat or a holiday.

How is it done properly?

  • Switch off the circuit at the panel before starting.
  • Choose a timer rated for the load, especially for a water heater that draws high current.
  • Install it in the panel or by the heater, with tight connections and a clear label.
  • Set the times with you and explain how to change them.
  • Check the circuit turns on and off on time and can still be switched manually.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a Shabbat timer myself?

A timer that goes into the panel means work inside the panel, and under the Electricity Law electrical work is allowed only for a licensed electrician. A plug-in timer for a regular outlet you can connect yourself, but it does not suit a water heater or a fixed lighting circuit.

Is the timer included in the price?

Usually not. The catalog covers installation. If the electrician brings the timer, its type and price appear in the quote.
