Tree pruning
Updated 2026-10-10
A tree whose branches touch the roof, block a window, or lean over the parking spot needs pruning. In D-Bell you photograph the tree, write its height and what should come off, and get quotes from verified gardeners.
How much does tree pruning cost?
Tree pruning usually costs ILS 550 to 1080. The price depends on the height of the tree, the amount of branches, access, and whether a tall ladder or a platform is needed. Hedge trimming costs ILS 200 to 380 per hour, and a garden cleanup ILS 180 to 340 per hour. Green waste removal is priced separately, so say in the request whether it should be included. These are average D-Bell catalog ranges.
Pruning or felling: what needs approval?
Under the Forest Ordinance, felling or moving a mature tree requires a license from the forest officer. A mature tree is at least two meters tall with a trunk at least 10 cm across, measured 130 cm above the ground, or at least 20 cm on a residential plot. Olive and carob trees are also protected. Pruning, meaning thinning or shortening branches, needs no license. But anything that may kill the tree, such as cutting the main trunk or the roots, counts as felling.
When is the right time to prune?
Most deciduous trees are pruned at the end of winter, when the leaves are gone and the branch structure is easy to see. Evergreens and citrus are usually pruned after flowering or after the harvest. A dry, broken, or dangerous branch comes off in any season.
What should I write in the request?
- The type of tree, if you know it, and a rough height.
- What you want: thin it, lower it, keep it off the roof or wall, or remove dry branches.
- Whether it is near overhead power lines. Branches touching a power line are dangerous: say so, and do not climb or cut near them yourself.
- Whether the green waste should be removed, and whether a vehicle can park near the garden.
How is it done properly?
- Check before starting whether the pruning needs the forest officer’s approval.
- Cut just outside the branch collar, not flush with the trunk, so the tree heals.
- Remove no more than about a quarter of the canopy at once.
- Lower heavy limbs in sections on a rope, so they do not hit the roof or cars.
- Clear the cuttings at the end, if that is part of the quote.
